You know that feeling when you’re two glasses into a bottle of wine, and suddenly, you’re texting people you shouldn’t be texting? Yeah, that’s the wine taking over. One glass turns into two, two turns into four, and before you know it, you’re making decisions you’ll regret by 8 AM. What nobody tells you is that tequila doesn’t do that. Real, high-quality tequila lets you enjoy yourself without the slippery slope. Plus, tequila, believe it or not, can be a healthier, guilt-free alternative to a bottle of wine.
Wine or Tequila? The Drink You Brag About vs. The Drink You Mistakenly Blame for Everything
If you think tequila is exclusively for wild nights and regrettable decisions, Borracho Tequila will make you believe otherwise. When enjoyed responsibly, the benefits of 100% Blue Agave Tequila outweigh those of wine and other spirits.
1. Won’t Guilt You Into Drinking More Than You Should
High-quality tequila is different from wine and low-grade mixtos. Pour a glass, sip it slowly, savor the flavor, and you’re done. Unlike a bottle of wine that whispers “have another glass” in your ear, a single pour of pure tequila delivers a distinct, often more immediately satisfying experience compared to wine, thanks to its intense, complex flavor profile, unique psychoactive “uplift,” and zero additives.
It’s easier to stay within your limits when you’re not wrestling with the mental gymnastics that come with wine consumption.
2. Lower Carbs, Fewer Calories, and Less Sugar Than You Think
Tequila is lower in calories and carbohydrates. A standard 1.5-ounce serving of tequila contains roughly 96 calories with virtually zero carbs. Compare that to a 5-ounce glass of wine, which can clock in at anywhere from 100 to 140 calories, plus several grams of carbs, and that’s assuming you stop at five ounces.
In many cases, wine also has added sugars and residual sugars from the fermentation process. With quality tequila, especially a Blanco, like our Blanco Artesanal, you’re getting a pure spirit distilled from agave with no additives masking shortcuts. And if you’re watching your intake, a serving of tequila is easier to track and control than pouring yourself “a glass” of wine that might be five ounces, or ten, depending on how your day went.
3. A Good Gut Feeling, Literally
Quality tequila is made from a succulent plant species called Blue Weber agave, which contains bioactive compounds like inulin. Inulin is a type of natural fructan polysaccharide (dietary fiber) that acts as a prebiotic. Essentially, light to moderate tequila consumption may support digestion by promoting a healthy gut microbiota. Who would’ve known!
4. Less Brutal Hangovers
This one may seem too good to be true if you spent your youth taking shot after shot, but bear with us.
Blanco tequila is a clear spirit with fewer congeners than wine. These chemical impurities are the byproducts of fermentation and aging, and they’re basically the reason why hangovers feel almost like punishments.
Wine, especially red wine, is overflowing with congeners. The darker and more aged it is, the more congeners it contains. This is why a night of wine drinking can leave you feeling like you’ve been hit by a truck the next day, even if you were pouring “reasonable” amounts.
Pure agave tequila, particularly a blanco, contains fewer congeners than wine and darker spirits like whiskey or cognac. Since it’s unaged and additive-free, it’s “cleaner” on the system. Mix that with responsible drinking, instead of pouring progressively larger glasses throughout the evening, and you’re sure to have a migraine-free morning.
5. You Won’t Look Like an Extra on Dracula
Have you ever taken a few sips of Cabernet, caught your reflection in the mirror, and realized you look like a vampire? We certainly have.
Red wine can cause long-lasting, deep-set stains on teeth. The combination of dark pigments, sticky tannins, and high acidity causes pigments to bind to enamel, making teeth look yellow or gray.
Since blanco tequila is clear and has no additives like mega purple, it won’t stain your teeth like red wine or dark liquors. And, as mentioned earlier, tequila has less sugar, which reduces your risk of cavities compared to dessert wines and sugary cocktails. Just remember to brush and floss at least 30 minutes after your last sip.
6. May Give Your Doctors a Run for Their Money
Alright, before we get carried away, if diabetes or heart disease runs in your family, please talk to your doctor, not your bartender. We love a spirited discussion (emphasis on spirited), but when it comes to your health, only take advice from a medical professional.
With that out of the way, tequila contains natural compounds, known as agavins, that your body can’t fully digest. Because they don’t break down like sugars or carbs, they don’t cause the same blood sugar spike that many foods and drinks do. Of course, that doesn’t mean tequila prevents diabetes, but its compounds may help promote insulin production, which people with diabetes often struggle with. Stable blood sugar also supports overall metabolic health, which may cut the risk of heart disease and ischemic stroke.
Again, while research suggests that light to moderate tequila consumption has potential health benefits, it’s not a prescription. Also, the research is still in early phases. We’re nowhere near a world where a cardiologist would swap out medicine for a glass of tequila. At best, it’s an interesting possibility, not a treatment plan.
The Verdict: Tequila Is the Pour That Packs Many Perks
100% agave tequila can be a healthier choice than wine because it contains zero sugar, fewer calories, no carbs, plus it’s full of good-for-you compounds like inulins and agavins. It’s a cleaner spirit with lower levels of congeners, plus it won’t stain your pearly whites! Just remember that all alcohol carries risks, and moderation is key to any potential benefits. As always, drink responsibly!
