Our Story

Welcome to Borracho Tequila, a brand born from the fiery spirit of Phoenix, Arizona. Nestled in the sun-soaked heart of this vibrant city, Borracho Tequila emerges as a testament to tradition, purity, and integrity. Founded by a restaurateur and lifelong service-industry veteran with operating experience across bars and restaurants in both the U.S. and Mexico, Borracho is built by people who understand margins, menu placement, and what consumers are truly looking for.

A Tradition of Integrity

At Borracho, we believe in honoring the ancient traditions of tequila-making. The agave plant, a sacred ingredient in our craft, is cultivated with the utmost respect and dedication. Integrity is at the core of our process, guiding us to create a product that embodies the purest essence of tequila—crafted with intention, patience, and discipline.

Purity Perfected

Our commitment to purity is unwavering. Each bottle of Borracho Tequila is produced additive-free, allowing the agave to speak for itself. Rigorous CRT testing confirms the quality and authenticity of our tequila, delivering a clean, unadulterated experience with every sip. From the cultivation of the agave plant to the final pour, Borracho Tequila is shaped by a deep respect for the land and the traditions that define true tequila.

Discovering the Casa Meza Distillery

The journey to finding the right distillery wasn’t about flash or scale—it was about soul. When Tom and Troy, owners of Borracho Cantina, Borracho Saloon, and Borracho Tequila, stepped into a small, unassuming facility tucked into the heart of Jalisco, they weren’t expecting much. The space was quiet and humble. They patiently waited for the owner, Francisco—known affectionately as Wassa—to arrive.

In his absence, Wassa’s daughter Karla welcomed them. With warmth and quiet confidence, she poured small tastings, shared stories, and offered to guide them through the distillery. Her pride in her family’s craft was unmistakable. Every wall, every barrel carried generations of dedication. The facility may have been modest, but its heart was immense.

And then, Wassa arrived.

The energy shifted instantly. Laughter, banter, and an easy connection filled the room. In those first shared moments, something clicked—a genuine sense of family, openness, and trust. As Tom looked around, he noticed something else: hand-painted, weathered signs scattered throughout the distillery, many bearing a single word—Borracho. It felt like destiny.

That day, Tom and Troy didn’t just find a distillery; they found a second home. A family. And the soul of Borracho Tequila.

Moved by the authenticity, tradition, and heart poured into every drop, they knew this was more than a product—it was a legacy. When Wassa shared his vision for the future of the distillery, Tom and Troy chose to become part owners, investing not just in production, but in people, process, and long-term stewardship.

This wasn’t just a partnership. This was family.

Today, Borracho Tequila is produced at this family-owned and operated distillery in Tequila, Jalisco, where Borracho holds ownership. This partnership allows for collaboration throughout the entire process—aligning on liquid profile, quality standards, and consistency—while securing a reliable, long-term supply.

A Legacy of Excellence

Our Master Distiller brings nearly 40 years of experience, overseeing small-batch, artesanal production using traditional methods rooted in the tequila heartland of Jalisco. This depth of knowledge and respect for craft is infused into every bottle of Borracho.

Both Borracho expressions have been recognized at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, with Borracho Blanco Artesenal earning a Gold Medal—providing immediate, trusted validation at retail and behind the bar.

The story of Borracho Tequila

Sustainability and Growth

Borracho Tequila is committed to responsible growth and sustainable agriculture. We cultivate approximately 3 million agave plants, replanting each one after harvest. To preserve soil health and support long-term agave farming, our fields are rejuvenated through traditional crop rotation using corn and sugarcane. These practices honor the land, strengthen future harvests, and protect the integrity of the craft.

Quality and Distinctiveness

Our tequila-making process reflects an uncompromising dedication to quality. We use approximately 9–10 kilograms of agave per batch, compared to the industry norm of 4–5 kilograms—delivering richer flavor, fuller texture, and authentic agave character. Our growing distillery stands as a commitment to thoughtful expansion, environmental respect, and a legacy built to last.
